nEFERRED SHIELDI'!P. 'JALLS AT NilP-2 The Radiological Assessment Branch has reviawed the apolicant's." arch 2R, and April 27, 1983 letters describing their plans for the tenporary @ferral of construction of several concrete block shielding walls at WIP-2.

In addition, we have discussed the aarlicant's reasons for deferral in a con-ference call to the applicant held on September 2,1933.

The primary cause for deferral of these block shield walls until after startup is financial.

Sena of the deferred walls are to cubicles containinq redundant components which will nnt be used.

Others are for cubicles or areas containint; radwaste equipment which will not he used because the radvaste processinn 9111 be perforned by an cutside contractor.

The applicant will install locked cates, on a tennorary basis, instead of shield ualls in the condenser tube access areas turing startup.

They will perfor radiation surveys of these araas during startup to assass area dose rates.

The applicant has rerformed an iLARA review of each te"porary shield wall deferral area an t has determined that these deferrals will have nn appre-ciable effect on personnel exposures.

P,ased on our review, we find the anplicant 's submittal acceptable.

For the areas c'escribed where the applicaat will install concrete block shielding ualls at a later date 4 hen the plant is onorational, tne anglicant shall ensure that norsonnel doses are reiniaizad durina construction of the shield walls.

This can he accrrplishe.] h7 drajning/f }ughinq adjacent rddioactive tanks and/or equip-cent, and using tenporary shielding when necessary.
