Dear Mr. MacDonald:
The Department of Energy (DOE) has a continuing need for the use of the DT-14 package that was certified on the NRC Certificate of Compliance No. 9852. As discussed with you earlier, the DOE failed to request renewal of the certificate, which expired on October 31, 1986, in time to meet the " timely renewal" requirements.
It is now requested that you review this package for renewal. Since the last renewal of this package, there have been no changes made to the Safety Analysis Report (SARP) nor have there been any modifications or changes to the package.
The package has been used for 600 shipments over the past five years without incident.
It is understood that due to the expiration of the NRC Certificate No. 9852 the package cannot be used until the NRC has completed its review and a renewal is issued.
