SUBJECT:
ADDITI0flAL QUESTIONS ON Wi:P-2 Attached are additional geology and seismology questions for HflP-2 which are the result of the meeting on llov. 17-10, 1931. Timely responses to these questions will be necessary in order to provide GS3 sufficient time to complete its SER input by Feb. 12, 1982. For clarification please contact Ina Altcman (27056) or Jeff Kimball (28999).

360.14 Provide your best deterministic judgement of the length, character, and capability of CLEW within the site region.
If you determine it to besegmentedasreportedinthemeetingofNoh. 17-18, 1981, provide a map with topographic base delineating the segments and discuss in detail the characterandcapabilityoftheindihidualsegments,withsupporting basisfor all judgements. (Contact Ina Alterman,# GSB,301-492-7856).
360.15 r<ei the Wallula Gap fault near Yellepit:
a.
..vV.Je an explanation of the difference in age of the Kennewick fanglomerate as reported in FSAR amendment 18, Section 2.5.1.2.4.5 on p. 2.5-96 and in Appendix 2.5N.8.1.6.
b.
Was the block of ash that was observed in the down-dropped block at the fault in the Yellepit trench': dated? If so, what age has been determined for it? If not, are there samples of that ash presently available for dating? (Contact Ina Alterman,G SB, 301-492-7856).
360.16 In a report prepared for the U. S. Corps of Engineers (Sismmons and O'Malley, 1979-1980);
a.
Figures 20a and 20b are from Vansycle Canyon: Have the youthful-appearing faceted spurs having linear character been investigated for possible young age and, therefore, capability? What is the explanation for this feature?
b.
Figures 21a and 21b taken south of Umapine: Has the pronounced escarpment on the lower third of the hill in the center / upper right of 21a and in the center right of 21b been investigated for possible recent movement? What is the explanation for this feature?

360.17 Reehaluate the structural and/or tectonic model of Umtanum Ridge in light of the geologic map and cross-section of the Golder Report (Fig.' 2ri-11 and 2ft-13) suggesting normal faulting on Umtanum where rehersearrowsareshown.(Contact: Tim Hait, USGS, 303-234-4697, or Ina Alterman, GSB, 301-492-7856).
360.18 Describe the uniqueness of Toppenish Ridge thIt lead you to conclude that an earthquake (or earthquakes) like that which produced the young scarps on Toppenish Ridge is unlikely to occur on other folds closer to the site (Contact Richard McMullen, GSB, 301-492-4415).
360.19 Can a case for segmentation similar to that made for Umtanum-Gable Mountain (Golder Associates Inc., 1981) be made regarding other folds near the Pasco Basin, such as the Yakima Ridge fold? Discuss the bases for your response (Contact Richard McMullen, GSB, 301-492-4415).
360.20 Provide a summary of all prominent structures (other than those incorporated into Q360.14 as part of the CLEW) in the site region, discussing in detail their character and capability with supporting ehidence for your judgement. If you determine any to be segmented, prohide a map on topographic base delineating the segments and discuss in detail the character and capability of the individual segments with supporting bases. (Contact Ina Alterman, GSB, 301-492-7855).
360.21 Provide the letter report and lineament maps from C. Glass to WPPSS concerning his aerial reconnaissance of Toppenish Ridge. (Contact Ina Alterman, GSB, 301-492-7856).

s 3-361.16 Estimate the ground motion (including high frequencies) assuming a magnitude M =4.0(largestswarmeYentintheColumbiaPlateau) occurred at a distance of 3 to 5 kilometers from the site. Compare the response spectra from this event to the SSE response spectra. Also, state your position on how large and close a potential swarm earthquake could come to the site. (Contact Jeff Kimba1T, GSB, 301-492-8999)).
361.17 Estimate the ground motion (both peaks and response spectra) from an ML = 6.1 (July 16, 1936) earthquake occurring close to the WNP-2 site.
Compute the median, mean and mean plus one standard deviation from this data set and compare them with the SSE response spectra. Also provide the staff with a comparison of the site conditions of the chosen strong motion recordings and the WNP-2 site. (Contact J. Kimball),
361.18 Provide a discussion on how, and at what stages, uncertainty was accounted for in the seismic exposure analysis (including graphical examples). (Contact Jeff Kimball, GSB 301-492-8999 or Ted Algermissen USGS303-234-4014.).
l 361.19 Provide the staff with any additional information (if available) on observations and felt effects of the 1872 earthquake which might not have
}
been communicated as of yet.
