MEMORAHDU t FOR:

SUBJECT:

REVIEW OF WUP-2 IlYDROGEN RECOMBINER SYSTEM The UNP-2 applicant has proposed to use a catalytic recombiner system manu-factured by Air Products. Inc. for combustible gas control following a DBA LOCA (10 CFR 50.44).

In the course of our review of the Air Products' topical reports regarding the catalytic recombiner, we concluded that other HPJi Dranches should review particular portions of those topical reports as follows.

Chenical Engineering Branch Air Products, Inc. has performed qualification tests to study the consequences of the chemical reaction between the pelletized platinum on alumina catalyst, that forms the catalyst bed, and the containment effluent, that contains iodine and methyl todido, on the overall perforr.iance of the recombiner.

F. Eltawila of the CSB has discussed this issue with V. Benaroya of CME 3 who indicated that the CMEB will review this portion of the topical report.

Equipment Oualification Branch During a discussion between F. Eltawila and P. 018enedetto of the EQB, we determined that the EQ3 should review the applicable portions of the topical report that deal with seismic and environmental qualification of the recombiner

-l system and its associated components.

l We are forwarding copies of all the information we have regarding this subject to the C'!E3 and the EQS. We will expect that tnese branches will be furnishing their evaluations directly to DL and that DL will appropriately integrate their evaluations into the SER or SSER for WNP-2.
