kRhk l59. File - M. Groff DEC 01 DSS:MEB Rdg. File MEMORANDUM FOR:

L. S. Rubenstein, Acting Chief Light Water Reactors Branch #4, DPH FROM:

R. J. Bosnak, Chief Mechanical Engir.eering Branch, DSS

SUBJECT:

MEB CONFIRMATOR'I PIPING ANALYSIS FOR WPPSS NUCLEAR PROJECT NO. 2 MEB has recently instituted a pr) gram of performing an independent confima-tory piping analysis for each plint undergoing OL review. For WNP-2 this analysis will be performed )y our contract personnel at the Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC). The purpose of this independent analysis will be to verify that the subject piping system meets the applicable ASME Code stress criteria. We do not intend to resolve i

differences between our calculated stresses and those of the applicant unless unusually large discrepancies are found, or unless Code criteria are not met.

This program will allow MEB to verify on a sampling basis that the applicant has correctly modeled its piping, has correctly used its computer codes, and has adequately accounted for the piping's as-built conditicn.

In order to proceed with our analysis, we will require certain information to be supplied by the applicant. Upon receipt of this infomation, ETEC will evaluate it to determine if additional infomation or clarification is required. Following the initial review we hope to schedule a site visit to acquaint the ETEC personnel with the plant and more specifically the piping system under review. At that time we can discuss the piping analysis with the applicant's design engineers and obtain any additional information required.

Therefore for the 10" MS(18)-2 SRV Otscharge line starting at the MS-RV-1 A Relief valve as shown on WPPSS FSAR figure 3.2-2, the applicant should 1

transmit the following information to ETEC:

Box 1449 Canoga Park, CA. 91304 As our analysis proceeds, we will also require the applicant to provide certain of its analytical results for comparative purposes, such as the ASME Code required Design Reports.

Please forward this request to the applicant. We do not expect this issue to delay our input to the Safety Evaluation Report and will include our conclusions in a supplement.
