NRC TMI-2 CLEAh0P PROJECT DIRECTORATE WEEKLY STATUS REPORT FOR APRIL 13 - 19, 1937 1.
D_EFUELING Pick and place fuel removal continued. Various light duty tools were used to remove fuel pin sections and place them in canisters.
The air lif t tool was then used to fill the interstitial spaces with smaller debris.
Two canisters were filled with debris. One of them was t ansferred to the spent fuel pool.

EliVIRONMENTAL MONITORING US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sample analysis results show that TMI site liquid effluents are in accordance with regulatory limits, NRC requirements, and the City of Lancaster Agreement.
TMI water effluents are sampled from the etation (Units 1 and 2) discharge and analyzed by EPA.
Gama spectrum analyses of the seven daily ccmposited samples for March 28 - April 04, 1987 indicated no TMI-2 related radicactivity.
EPA', gasso spectruni analysis of the NRC's IMI outdoor air sa:nple for April 9 - 16, 1987 shcwed no reactor related radioactivity.
The water works for the City of Lancaster composited seven daily samples frca March 29 - April 4, 1987.
EPA's gamma spectrum analysis of the con,posite semple showed no reactor related radioactivity.

Robot desludging of the reactor building basement continues.
Robot scabbling in the seal injection valve room resumed.

FEETING The Advisory Panel for the Decentaaination of Three Mile Island Unit 2 met with the NRC Commissioners cn April 16, 1987, in Washington, DC en the issue of TMI-2 accident-generated water disposal.
Prior to the meeting, Panel Chairtr.an Arthur E. Perris in a letter (3-31-87) to Chairman Zech noted the following Panel actions:
1)
A tr.otion that "the Draft Supplement to the Environmental Impact dealing with the disposal of the accident-generated water is an acceptable document" possed with a vote of eight (8) for and two (2) against.
A motion to " oppose the evaporation option" put forth by GPU was 2) passed with a vote of five (5) for, fcur (4) against and one (1) abstention.

A motion to " maintain the status quo until a stronger case can be mode for definitive ection, including evaporation or a more desirable altcraativc".::: nct appreved dus to a vote of five (5) for and five (5) against.
At the meeting the Comaission and the Panel discussed this issue further.
The Panel was asked to provide the Commission with its view on when the disposal issue should be ultimately resolved.
