ULNRC-14 3 5 DOCKET NUMBER 50-483 UNION ELECTRIC COMPANY CALLAWAY PLANT GENERIC LETTER 83-28

References:

2. ULNRC-763 dated 3-12-84
3. NRC (P. W. O'Connor) letter to U.E.

(D. F. Schnell) dated 12-22-86 Recent discussions.with the Staff have indicated that our responses to Item 2.2.1 of Generic Letter 83-28 need clarification.

As discussed in References 1 and 2, the Callaway Q-List and the Computerized History and Maintenance Planning System (CHAMPS) are used to establish safety classifications for equipment at Callaway Plant.

All work requests indicate whether the affected equipment is safety-related and provide the appropriate working constraints.

Safety-related classifications are also indicated on design drawings (e.g. P & ID's, electrical schematics, etc.) and the FSAR (Tables 3.2-1 and 3.ll(B)-3).

Since the procedures used for working on safety-related equipment are implemented via the work request process, with a direct indication of safety classification, maintenance and I & C personnel are aware that they are wotilng on safety-related equipment and observe all applicable constraints, as required by the work request and referenced procedures.

Reference 3 provided NRC's approval of our responses to Item 2.1 of Generic Letter 83-28.

It is noted that our administrative programs for working on reactor trip system components are the same as for all safety-related equipment.

We hope that this clarifies this issue and will support Staff closure of Item 2.2.1.

Very truly yours, Donald F.
