Mr. J. Nelson Grace On July 2,1986, Mr. R. E. Folker, Vogtle Project Quality Assurance Engineer, informed Mr.

E.

F.

Christnot of the USNRC of a potentially reportable condition involving Valcor solenoid valves.

Valcor Engineering Corporation notified Georgia Power Company of three instances at other plants whereby valves using reactor chemistry water as their fluid at temperatures above 440*F experienced spring failures after one to two years service.

The spring material in each case was 17-7PH stainless steel and the cause of failure is suspected to be hydrogen embrittlement.

A preliminary review has identified six Valcor solenoid valves in each unit of the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant that will be subjected to reactor chemistry water at temperatures above 440 F.

An engineering evaluation to determine potential implications on plant safety is currently in progress.

Georgia Power Company expects to inform the USNRC of the results of this evaluation by September 20, 1986.

This response contains no proprietary information and may be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
