CW FCUP:GHB n MAR 0 51987 Docket 70-11p MEMORANDUM FOR: Edward J. McAlpine, Section Chief Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards Branch Division of Radiation Safety and Safeguards, RII FROM: W. T. Crow, Acting Chief Uranium Fuel Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety, NMSS-
SUBJECT:
REPRESENTATIVENESS OF AIR SAMPLING -
-WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. (DOCKET 70-1151)
Your memo of October 2,1986, suggested that our position on acceptance criteria for determinations of representative air sampling be documented in a Branch Technical Position.
~We have not prepared a written position for acceptance criteria. There are a' number of methods and combinations of methods which may be used. These include smoke bombs, multiple " spider" sampler heads, lapel samplers, etc.,
and combinations of these methods. Different methods should be combined with site-specific characteristics of ventilation. No universal method is known to be uniquely appropriate.
While we recognize that this is not entirely responsive to your request, it must be recognized that there is no substitute for sound engineering
' judgement. If your staff needs assistance regarding specific situations, please call us. In the meantime, we plan to continue to require performance specifications for fuel facility licensees.
