I INTRODUCTION I The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in I Sections 3.1.la(4), 3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and

~

electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the I natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the THINS.

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in December 1986. Sample collection requirements described in the ETS and associated with the 1986 field sampling season were completed as of 25 November. No collections were I made during December. Details are provided in the following pages

wherein progress is described for each program.

Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

Vater Quality Analysis i

Objective: To measure select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island l Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological Sur-vey samples.

Progress: Vater quality data collected during 1986 vere coded for computer entry, entered, and subsequent printouts were proofed.

I Benthic Macroinvertebrates I Objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity I of THINS.

Progress: Laboratory identification was completed for all chironomids collected on 14 May and oligochaetes collected on 11 June 1986. Benthos collected on 13 August were sorted, identified and biomassed, excepting chironomids and oligo-chaetes. Computer entry of May benthos data was initiated.

I Ichthyoplankton Objective: To determine species compcsition, relative abun-dance, density, and seasonal and spatial distribution of ich-thyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of THINS.

, Progress: Ichthyoplankton field sampling for the 1986 season was completed with the 26 August collection. Laboratory identification, tabulation, and length frequency determination of all ichthyoplankton collected on 1, 8, 15/17, 22, and 30 April and 7 and 13 May was completed. Processing of ichthyo-plankton collected from three stations on 21 May was also completed.

il Seine I objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence I of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicin-ity of THINS.

i I

Progress: Fishes collected on 10 September, 24 September, 14 October, and 11 November vere identified, measured, weighed, and recorded on length frequency data sheets. Seine data for 1986  !

l vere prepared for computer entry.

Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of THINS.

Progress: All 1986 electrofishing data vere coded and prepared for computer entry.

I Creel Survey objective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-I fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near THINS.

Progress: Creel survey tabulations of species caught / harvested during 1986 vere initiated.
