ISSUANCE OF DRAFT SAFETY EVALUATION OF TOPICAL REPORT NEDC-
' 32721P, " APPLICATION METHODOLOGY FOR THE GENERAL ELECTRIC
~ STACKED DISK ECCS SUCTION STRAINER"
, Dear ' r. Green M
By letters' dated April 3,1997, and November 21,1997, General Electric Company (GE) submitted Topical Report NEDC-32721P, " Application Methodology for the General Electric Stacked Disk ECCS Suction Strainer," to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for review. On February 3,1999, the staff issued Part I of its safety evaluation which provided the staff's evaluation of the methodology used to determine strainer performance. Part ll of the staff's review addressed the methodology to determine the structural loadings due to hydrodynamic forces ~during an accident. The staff has completed its evaluation of the structuralloadings and has prepared a draft safety evaluation which is attached.
- The evaluation is still in draft form and has received limited management review.' However, at this stage of review, the staff has concluded that a technical meeting would be beneficial between GE, licensees who have installed the GE strainer, and the staff. It is hoped that by using the information in such a manner it will hasten the path to resolution.
. Because the attached Safety Evaluation Report (SER), based on your proprietary Licensing Topical Report NEDC-32721 P, submitted November 21,1997, contains proprietary information, j
