NRC Generic Letter 97-04 dated October 7,1997," Assurance of Sullicient Net Positive Suction IIcad for Emergency Core Cooling and Containment lleat Removal Pumps" On October 7,1997, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued Generic Letter (GL) 97 04 (Reference 1) regarding an issue which may have generic implications for Emergency Core Cooling System pumps. The GL reqeired, within 30 days, a written response indicating: (a) whether or not the requested information will be submitted, and (b) whether or not the requested information will be submitted within the requested time period. Ily this letter, the Nebraska Public Power District (District) is providing the required 30-day response.
The District is participating in a newly-established IlWR Owners' Group (11WROG) elTort which has the objectives of reviewing current ilWR industry net positive suction head (NPSil) calculational methodology and recommending a consistent approach for utility 90-day response to the GL. It is expected that the information in the 90-day response will provide assurance to the Staff that NPSil issues are being adequately addressed. The BWROG established dialog with the Staff prior to the issuance of the generic letter and plans to continue that interaction so that NPSil issues are properly addressed. The District intends to provide a 90-day response to the GL considering the recommendations resulting from the IlWROG NPSil Committee.
