Dear Madame Secretary,
Since Sag Harbor is less than 20 miles frorn the Millstone Nuclear Plant in Waterford.
Conn., and since the NRC has refused to extend the 10 mile emergency zone to include Long Island emergency p!cnning it of extreme interat to We residents of tia. Nt End.
I want to urge that the emergency planning regulation be amended to REQUIRE the availability of potassium lodide (KI) for the public in the event of nuclear accidents. The regulation es it is new worded... " the proposed rule would require that CONSIDERATION

shall be given to include potassium iodide.." has no teeth and must be changed.
The nuclear ' industry should bear the cost; government agencies snould have the responsibility of seeing that potentially effe:ted communities have local stockpiles of potassium iodide. NRC's announced plan for regional stockpiling should be amended; local stockpiling is necessary to make the distribution of KI possible in an emergency; K! is not effective after six
- hours it must be stockpiled in schools,hospitats, tire, police and other municipi.1 centers.

J protect the public's health and safety. Please consider the people of Long Island who are not protected and who canrot, given our topography and highway system, evacuate in abe case of an accident at Millstone.
