~ DESCRIPTION:

Tritium activated gaseous' tritium light-sources (GTLS) are laser -

sealed borosilicate. glass coated internally withia phosphor and-

filled with tritium gas.

Tritium"is an isotope of hydrogen which emits' low energy-beta radiation which excites phosphor causing it

~

.to emit visible-light. - The/ wavelength and color of the. light-

' depends.upon the:make-up~of the phosphor and can vary from red

?(603-618 nm) : to blues (450-48 nm) (nm = nanometer).

-The-brightness of microlights is varied by the tritium content; they are filled at pressures up to'~2.5catmospheres (253.3.kPa) to achieve-maximum brightneos.

"A comprehensive range of,chapes'and sized were manufactured by either machine'or. hand blown 1 techniques.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

-The gaseous tritium light sources were assembled into safety signs and markers and various military optical equipment for the illumination of dials, graticules, etc.

PROTO1TPE TESTING:

All microlights manufactured were subjected to a 24 hour2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> deionized water soak test for leakage or source contamination.

A sample of the soak water was tested by liquid scintillation techniques to determine that the detectable tritium did not exceed 0.050 pCi (1.85 kBg) per source.

Any light source exceeding this level was rejected.

Before final inspection all microlights were throughly washed using a radiological decontaminant and' rinsed off with water.

American National Standard No. N540 pre-supposes the environment conditions which GTLS must withstand.

The requirements for temperature and thermal shock are specified by the inherent properties of borosilicate glass tubing and confirmed by the thermal cycles encountered during the manufacturing. process for GTLS outlined above.

Sirflarly, during the~ manufacture the GTLS were subjected to reduced pressure conditions more severe chan that specified in N540.

A determination was made that since unmounted'GTLS woeld only be distributed to specific licensees for assembly into-complete devices, the N540 vibration and' impact' test' requirements were, from a safety stand-point, best met by performing _such tests on the completed device.

All goods received which were either for inclusion in a manufactured item or for use in a manufacturing process were

Lexamined and approved by the quality controller before use.

The person receiving the incoming goods (a) signed.any Telivery
notes as *unexamined", -(b) notified the quality controller of the
receipt =of the goods and gave him any delivery notes.

- No incoming goods were used unless approved for us, b;' the quality controller.

The quality controller examined the incoming goeds and then notified the-. relevant department supervisor if approved or not.

He arranged for the transfer to the relevant departnent of any goods' approved and for the return of-the rejected goods to the supplier.

A file was kept which recorded the delivery dated, qur atity and approval.or rejection of all material received. Specifications were:kept on the front of-the card indicating the type of.

material.

A raw material reject note and supplier complaint was issued-for

-any rejected material.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

The Brandhurst1 Incorporated Models S, CT,-CC, RT, RC, -

lDA,,and.'DR Gaseous Tritium Light Sources (GTLS) were distributed'only to persons specifically licensed by the Nk7 or an Agreement Sate.

Handling, _ storage,zuse,_ transfer, and disposal: To be 1 determined by.the licensing authority.

Devices containing these eaurces shall have been tested to demonstrate the abil.ty of the device to protect the scurce and user prior to distribution of the device.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

Based c our review of the information and test data cited below, we continue to conclude that the Brandhurst Incorporated Models S,

CT, CC, RT, RC, DA and DR gaseous Tritium Light Sources designs are acceptable for licensing purposes.

Furthermore, we continue to concluce that these sources would be expected to maintain their containment integrity for normal conditions of use and accidental conditions which might occur during uses specified in this certificate.

Brandhurst, Inc.'s, materials license expired on June 30, 1989, and as of the effective date of this document, has been known by the NRC to be no longer in business.
