NRC-INTEGRATED--INSPECTION REPORT 50-424/97-09. 50 425/97-09 AND

On September 20. 1997, the NRC completed an inspection at your Vogtle Units 1
and 2 reactor' facilities.
The enclosed report presents the results of that
-inspection.
-
During-the seven-week period. your conduct of activities at the Vogtle
facility was generally characterized by safety-conscious operations, sound
engineering and maintenance practices, and appropriate radiological work
' controls.
However, three violations were identified. The first violation dealt with
corrective maintenance performed on a safety-related piece of equipment
without a proper work order.
The second violation was for-a failure of
security personnel to conduct a. search of materials prior to entry into a
vital area. The third violation was in the area of- fire )rotection. We are
concerned with-the violation concerning fire protection w11ch may indicate a
decline in performance in this area.
' The violations are cited in the enclosed Notice of Violation (Notice), and the -
circumstances surrounding the violations are described in detail in the
enclosed report.
Please note that you are required to respond _to this letter
and should follow the _ instructions specified in the enclosed Notice when
preparing your response.
The NRC will use your response, in part, to

determine whether further enforcement action is necessary to ensure complia1ce
with regulatory requirements.
