Reference:

G. Stanley and K. Graesser (Commonwealth Edison) to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comn'ission letter dated December 13,1996.

On September 5,1997, represent.itives of the Commonwealth Edison (Comed) Nuclear Licensing Department had a drrp-in visit with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)

Staff. The purpose of the visit was to determine the status of the NRC review of the Byron and Braidwood Improwd Technical Specifications (ITS) submittal (Referenced j

Letter). Comed appreciated the opportunity to discuss the ITS project with the staff.

'p The Staff reported that they expect to provide a Safety Evaluation (SE) to Comed in time for a summer 1998 implementation. The Schedule for Comed implementation is, by Stafi's decision," compressed": Comed will be provided a draft SE in April 1998 with a d/

final SE following in June 1998.

The purpose of this letter is to provide a formal notification that it is still Comed's intention to develop and implement the ITS at the Byron and Braidwood sites with an implementation date ofJuly 31,1998. The ITS Project represents a substantial effort and significant monetary investment. Much of the expected benefit for this effort is based on implementing ITS in the Summer of 1998. Due to the scheduling of upcoming outages for Byron and Braidwood, and our intention to pursue a simultaneous implementation with all units in operation the available windows of opportunity are limited.
