NRC IE Information Notice 87-08
Subject:
Response to IE Information Notice 87-08
" Degraded Motor Leads in Limitorque DC Motor.
Ooerators" Upon the authorization of Fermi 2 to exceed 20 percent power, Detroit Edison reviewed and has taken. specific action to resolve concerns addressed in IE Information Notice 87-08.
Although no formal or written response to this notice is required, the information and specific actions are being brought to your attention because of the subject of the Notice and also due to the potential interest by the NRC staff as Fermi 2 proceeds into Test Condition 2.
The IE Information Notice 87-08 was issued to inform recipients of potentially defective de motors installed in Limitorque motor operators.
The motors in question were manufactured at H. K. Porter between December 1984 and December 1985.
After notification, Detroit Edison initiated a review to determine how many of these potentially defective dc motors were located or installed at Fermi 2.
The review discovered that there were six motors shipped, and subsequently installed at Fermi 2 that fit the appropriate serial numbers and manufacturing codes detailed in the Notice.
The six valves associated with the respective potentially defective motors were then declared inoperable pending resolution and were subjected to further inspections.

.The ensuingJinvestigation revealed that of these six potentially defective motors only one valve (B2103F019) actuallyf had the motor with discrepant lead wires.
The
~
motor-for B2103F019 was replaced with a spare motor having acceptable lead. wires and the valve was returned
-to service. -The remaining five motor termination boxes.
(for~ valves E4105F004, F006, F012,. F041.and F042) were opened and the lead wires visually inspected..All five
. motor termination boxes contained acceptable. lead wires and the valves were returned to service.
These actions complete Detroit Edison's response to IE Information Notice 87-08.
