SUBJECT:
FIRE DAMPERS SUUPLIED BY AMERICAN WARMING AND VENTILATION COMPANY DO NOT CLOSE FULLY WHEN MOUNTED IN HORIZONTAL UP FLOW POSITION.
DESCRIPTION OF OCCURENCE, DEFICIENCY OR INCIDENT:
Russ Wallauer, Lead Compliance Engineer from DLC called E. Wenzinger on 7/9 at 1:22 p.m.
He stated that fire dampers supplied by American Warming and Ventilation Company do not close fully when mounted in horizontal up flow positions. Missing damper springs were determined to be the cause of not fully closing.
Fire dampers in HVAC systems mounted in vertical duct work with up-flow conditionsu[M.
Failure of these dampers could allow fire to penetrate to adjacent fire zones and ad-versely impact redundant safety-related equipment.
Discovered during testing - eleven (safety-related) dampers have the missing springs; also, 7 non-safety - 18 total.
First set found on April 17, 1986 (first N&D), others found May 27 and 28, 1986 when remainder were testiegfand deficient dampers found.
It appears that springs were missing when received 74e w o6r, Issue may be generic, may be very hard to put springs in place in manufacturing process.
Springs are located at the bottom of damper - push blade (1 of 4) up again{ gravity.
