Page 1 of 9 SCOTCH BRAND TAPES 130C AND 33+ INSTALLATION Section A 1.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE (1) This procedure provides instructions necessary to use Scotch Brand, tapes 130C and 33+ over =iNf$$5 insulated splices and damage or cracked cable insulation to maintain environmental qualification (EQ), and insulation integrity of cable.

2.0 PRECAUTIONS AND LIMITATIONS (1) Perfonn only those steps required to complete the necessary maintenance.

(2) Observe standard safety precautions while working on electrical equi pnent.

(3) Review the applicable RWP for requirenents in the work area.

(4) This procedure may be performed over electrical connection son equipment in the EQ program and will provide proper insulation for 480 volts service and less.

(5) Environmentally qualified tape splices must be housed in an enclosure if the splices may possibly be exposed to direct spray or steam. The enclosure acts as a direct impingement barrier against these moisture sources. The enclosure must have weephole(s) at the lowest point to allow any acctsnulated moisture to escape.

(6) The instructions of this procedure must be followed exactly so that the equipments' envirorsnental qualification status is not jeopardized.

(Only Scotch Brand tapes 130C and 33+ may be used.)

(7) Any discrepancies noted during the conduct of this procedure must be doctrnented on the Procedure Remarks Sheet ( Attachment 2) and reported to the appropriate supervisor and the EQ engineer for disposition.

3.0 PREREQUISITE CONDITIONS (1) Verify the status of the electric power for the cables to be taped, and tag out if required.

(2) Notify the Operations Shift Supervisor before beginning work.

EQS (b) Q.C. Witness Point: Verify condition of splice and cable jacket and the use of approved solvent.

(4) For crotch-type (V) and in-line multiconductor (more than two) connections, fill in the voided area with Scotch Brand tape 130C. (See Figure 1 above for exanples of splices.)

( a) Apply the tape, with the tacky side out, with tension (stretch the tape until its width is reduced to approximately 50% of its original width) to each of the individual conductors.

(b) Apply the tape to the splice in the crotch area and continue to a minimum of 1 inch past the end of the splice or danage insulation onto the conductor.

NOTE If it was necessary to fill the voided areas of the splice with tape, the application of the ;30C insulating tape must extend past the

" filler" tape and onto the conductors. Do not cover up cable ID m arkers.

(a) The tape must cover the entire connection or danaged/ cracked area and extend a minimum of 1 inch beyond it on both sides.

EQS (b) Q.C. Witness Point: Verify proper number of layers and lapping of tape.

(6) Apply two half-lapped layers of Scotch 33+, tacky side in, at minimum tension (stretch tape just enough so that it adheres snoothly) over the insulating tape.

( a) Ensure all of the insulating tape is covered and that the 33+

EQS (b) Q.C. Witness Point: Verify proper number of layers and lapping of ta pe.

NOTE When the finished cables are returned to their enclosure, ensure that the minimum bending radius of the conductors involved is not violated (i .e., no sharp bends, twists, or kinks) .
