INTRODUCTION I The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in I Sections 3.1.la(4), 3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the I natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the TMINS.

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in November 1986 (Table 1). The following changes in the THINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule were made during November: el'ctrofishing, e originally scheduled for 13 November was can-I celled due to boat motor failure, therefore sampling was rescheduled for 18 November. Sampling on 18 November was impeded by thunderstorms, sub-sequently electrofishing was rescheduled and conducted on 19 November.

Details are provided in the following pages wherein progress is described for each program.

Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-I quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

Vater Quality Analysis Objective: To measure select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological Sur-I vey samples.

I 1

I

I .

I Progress: Vater quality samples were collected on 12 November 1986 and forwarded to TMI-EC (Table 1). Select water quality parameters were also measured at sampling times and locations of the General Ecological Survey.

I Benthic Macroinvertebrates Objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

I Progress: Benthos sampling on 12 November 1986 consisted of replicate (4) samples taken at each of the three benthos sta-tions (Table 1). Identifications of specimens collected on 17 April were completed and prepared for computer entry. Benthos cullected on 14 May were sorted and identified, excepting chironomids. Samples collected on 11 June and 9 July were also I sorted and identified, however, oligochaete and chironomid identifications were not completed.

An audit of the benthic macroinvertebrate laboratory procedures was conducted by Three Mile Island Environmental Controls (TMI-EC) personnel on 19 November 1986.

Ichthyoplankton lI I

Objective: To determine species composition, relative abun-dance, density, and seasonal and spatial distribution of ich-thyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

! Progress: Ichthyoplankton field sampling for the 1986 season j was completed with the 26 August collection. An audit of ichthyoplankton laboratory procedures was conducted by THI-EC on 19 November 1986.

I I Seine I Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicin-ity of THINS.

Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six samp-ling stations on 11 November 1986 (Table 1). Fishes taken on 23 July, 5 August, and 27 August were identified, measured, and I weighed. July and August seine data vere tabulated and recorded on length frequency data sheets.

An audit of seine laboratory procedures was conducted by TMI-EC on 19 November 1986.

I Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of THINS.

I Progress: Electrofishing at the six stations was completed on 19 November 1986 (Table 1). Samples consisted of 30 fish of 7 species (Table 2). More fish (10 specimens) were collected at Station 10A3 than at any other station. The largest number of species (4) were collected at Station 11Bl. Valleye dominated the catch. There was no evidence of ectoparasitism on any spe-cimens. One pumpkinseed exhibited wounds related to angling, I including the loss of one eye.

I E 3 I

I I Creel Survey I Objective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the i Susquehanna River near TMINS.

Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 8, 16, 20, and 25 November 1986 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 28 anglers who reportedly fished 29.50 hours5.787037e-4 days
0.0139 hours
8.267196e-5 weeks
1.9025e-5 months
, caught 39 fish, and harvested 5 fish (13% of the total catch)(Tables 3 through 6). The average catch per effort (c/e) and harvest per effort (h/e) were 1.32 I and 0.17 fish per hour, respectively. Valleye was the predomin-ant fish caught (26 specimens), and harvested (4 specimens) by anglers. Most anglers (14), most fish caught (15), most fish harvested (3), and most hours fished (13.75) were recorded at the York Haven Generating Station. The highest c/e (4.00) was recorded at the Vest Dam. Anglers were predominantly residents of York or Dauphin Counties and the majority indicated that they I eat at least a portion of their catch.
