Dear Sir:

This special report is submitted in accordance with LaSalle Unit 2 Operating

, License NPF-18, Appendix A, Technical Specification 3.3.7.9 and 6.6.c.

Due to construction activities required for various Unit 2 Refuel work requests and design modifications, it was necessary to remove fire detection zones 2-16 and 2-16P (Unit 2 Drywell) from service as a conservative precaution to prevent spurious zone fire alarms due to extensive welding and cutting in the areas.

LaSalle County Station is in compliance with the Action Statement of Technical Specification 3.3.7.9 by establishing an inspection of the Drywell once per each eight (8) hour shift.

Fire detection zones 2-16 and 2-16P will remain out of service for a period i extending through the Unit 2 first refueling outage, which is scheduled to end May 1987. This will be necessary due to the excessive amount of welding and cutting required for Unit 2 refuel design modifications and construction activities. The once per shift inspection of the Unit 2 Drywell will continue throughout the Unit 2 first refueling outage, and all welding and cutting in the Drywell will be performed in accordance with LAP-900-10 (Fire Prevention for Welding and cutting) to ensure proper fire protection standards are followed during and after welding, cutting, grinding, or open flame operations. Fire protection will therefore be maintained during the period of this event.
