Letter from Mr. S. A. McNeil (NRC), to Mr. J. A. Tiernan (BGRE),

dated December 3,1986 Gentlemen:

You asked that we submit the information requested in Reference (a) by January 8,1987 or submit a schedule within 15 days of receipt of the request. We have determined that it is not possible to submit the requested information by January 8.

At this time, we estimate that we can provide the information you requested by June 1,1987.

This date is a preliminary estimate based on:

the current workload for the engineers who must provide the information, the extensive amount of information that you requested, and a conversation with the technical reviewer, Rick Kendall, to clarify some of the requested information.

We may find that we can respond before June 1,1987, but we need more time to scope out the request in full before committing to an earlier date.

We are committed to implement the ATWS rule on Unit 2 during the spring 1987 refueling outage. This is based on having a complete NRC review prior to our final design so that any changes can be incorporated in the final design.

Very truly yours, C
