Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 Reduced Duration Type A Testing Requirements Gentlemen:

On May 16, 1986, we submitted our intentions to use the reduced l

duration Type A testing.

Due to questions raised by the NRC reviewer, this letter is provided to clarify and supercede our previous submittal.

f In accordance with the Beaver Valley Power Station Unit No. 1 Technical Specifications 3/4.6.1.2, the provisions and methods of Appendix l

J to 10CFR50 and ANSI N45.4-1972 govern the duration of Type A testing.

ANSI N45.4-1972, Section 7.9, Computation of Leakage Rate-The Absolute

Method, states that " Leakage rates shall therefore be calculated on at least an hourly basis for 24 consecutive hours (or other agreed upon period)".

Provisions for reduced duration Type A testing have been approved by the NRC. These provisions are contained in the Bechtel Topical Report BN-TOP-1, Revision 1,

November 1972.

Beginning with the fifth refueling outage, it is our intent to use the reduced duration test acceptance criteria at Beaver Valley Power Station Unit No. 1, until the ANS 56.8 Standard Committee develops new criteria for reduced duration testing based on the Mass Point Analysis Method.

Beaver Valley's test acceptance criteria for reduced duration testing is based on the BV-TOP-1 criteria.

If, however, the full 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
duration is performed, only the Absolute Method criteria would apply.

If you have any additional questions regarding our intention, please contact us at your convenience.

Very truly yours, LJ4 e607280096 860721 J
