Dear Sir:
The New York Power Authority plans to insert four (4) fuel bundles of the Westinghouse QUAD + design into the FitzPatrick core as part of Reload 7 as described in Reference 1.
These lead test assemblies are part of a program to qualify Westinghouse as a vendor of nuclear fuel for FitzPatrick.
The Reload 7/ Cycle 8 refueling outage is currently scheduled to begin in January 1987.
Westinghouse has submitted a report titled, " Supplemental QUAD + Demonstration Assembly Report for James A.
FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant, WCAP-11159" to the NRC in Reference 2.
The report contains a detailed comparison of the QUAD + bundle to the GE P8X8R bundle with which it was designed to be compatible.
WCAP-11159 has been submitted to the NRC for technical review.
The Authority will be referencing this report in the Technical Specifications amendment application concerning Reload 7/ Cycle 8 in the near future.
