T OVERVIEW During the manth of June, discharges were made from discharge paths 001 (main circulating pumps), 001-B, 001-D, 001-E, 001-F, 001-G, 001-H, 001-L, 002, 003, 004, and 005.

No discharges were made from discharge paths 001-A, 001-C, 001-J, and 001-K nor 001-1.

Chemical, radiochemical and toxicity analyses were performed in accordance with chemical analysis procedures contained in the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, Units 1 and 2, Plant Manual, Volume 8, or by state approved laboratories, or by laboratories approved by the Regional Board staff.

During June, there were three events relating to chlorination of the circulating water pumps (CWP) that prompted notification of the Regional Board staff.

The first event was on June 9, when analysis of the first sample taken during chlorination on that day resulted in a calculated discharge concentration of 250 ug/1.

Subsequent review of the analyzer preparation procedure revealed that residual chlorine was not removed from the sensor prior to the first analysis.

This causes an artificially high analysis.

The proper procedure for analyzer preparation has been emphasized with the technicians performing the analyses.

This event was discussed with Mr. Bill Leonard of the staff on June 10.

The second event, involving a sample collection problem that was immediately corrected, was discussed with Mr. Roger Briggs of your staff on June 20.

The third event occurred on June 26, when chlorination took place with only three circulating water pumps operating.

CWP l-1 was shut down temporarily to repair a leaking condenser tube.

During chlorination of CWP 2-1, the calculated discharge concentration from the second sample analysis was 226 ug/1. The chlorine injection rate was reduced during chlorination of CWP 2-2 to reduce the discharge concentration.

Operations and chemistry personnel were counseled on the need to reduce the chlorine injection rate when less than four circulating water pumps are operating.

This event was discussed with the Executive Officer on June 27.

SUMMARY

OF MONITORING PROGRAM A.

Monitoring of Plant Influent and Effluent 1.

Results of monitoring of plant influent and effluent in June are reported on Form Q-2's found in Appendix 1.

2.

A static bioassay of Discharge 001 are performed quarter-ly in Januat'y, April, July and October.

I l

(

B.

Monitoring of Receiving Water.c 1.

Ecological Studies at Diablo Canyon Ecological studies in accordance with the Thermal Effects Monitoring Program (Provision D.4) continue.

2.

Sediment Analysis Sediment samples are collected in September.

3.

Aerial Photography of Kelp Beds Aerial photography (infrared film type 2443) of kelp beds in the vicinity of Diable Canyon was not taken in June due to poor weather conditions. Color transparencies of the photos will be included in next months' monitoring report.

4.

Surface Water Temperature Surface water temperatures are reported in Appendix 2.

5.

Stratified Water Temperatures Stratified water temperatures are presented in Appendix 3.

A map is included rhowing station locations.

6.

pH and Dissolved Oxygen of Receiving Waters Results of pH and dissolved oxygen monitoring in the receiving waters are provided in Appendix 4.

Also included is a map of station locations.

7.

Incident Light Measurements Incident light measurements are reported in Appendix 5.

8.

In situ Bioassay Results of the Mussel Watch program will be reported to the Board directly from the California Department of Fish and Game in their periodic report for this program.
