Dear Mr. MacDonald:
We request an amendment to Certificate of Compliance Number 9147 issued for We have foun( that%me of the Model 850 the Model 850 Type B(U) Package.
s source changers exceed the regulatory limit of 200mR per hour on the surface of the package when loaded with a single source of 240 curies of Ir-192. To permanently correct this problem we intend to add shielding plates on the sides and bottom of the source changer. The plates will be stainless steel and have a thick-ness of 0.25 inch on each side and 0.50 inch on the bottom.
3 The stainless steel plates will be welded onto the outside of the existing source changer as described in Drawing Number 85090.
We have also found a problem with scattered radiation through the empty tube of the source changer when the package is shipped with only one source.
In some cases this causes the radiation level at the top of the source changer to exceed 200mR per hour. To permanently correct this problem, we intend to install shielded shipping plugs, as described in Drawing Numbers 85000-17 and 85000-18, over both tubes of the source changer. These will not interfere with the installation of the shipping plate.
These changes will not adversely affect the structural integrity of the package. The Model 850 source changer has already demonstrated its ability to
. withstand the drop, puncture and compression tests without any loss of struc-tural integrity or increase in radiation levels. Therefore, no additional tests were performed on the modified package. The total weight of the package will increase from 75 pounds (39 kg) to approximately 105 pounds (47.6 kg).
Presently, we are performing complete radiation profiles on every Model 850 source changer before it is shipped to assure surface readings are below 200mR per hour and readings at one meter are below 10mR per hour.
We request that the Certificate of Compliance Number 9147 reflect the use of additional shielding plates and the use of the shielded shipping plugs for transportation. Enclosed please find $150.00 as the application fee for this amendment.
