In your July 18, 1997, letter, you proposed an alternative to the ASME Code, i

You proposed to use ASME Code Case N-516-1. " Underwater Welding.Section XI.

Division 1," to install modified mction strainers-at-the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. Units 2 and 3.

We conclude that compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50.55a(g) would 2

-result in hardship or unusual difficulty without a compensatory increase in the level of quality and safety. _Therefore, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(ii) we authorize you to use Code Case N-516-1, as you

- proposed in your July-18,1997, letter.

Our evaluation and conclusions are contained in the enclosed Safety Evaluation.

Division-1," to install modified suction strainers at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Units 2 and 3.

l We conclude that compliance with the requirements of 10 CFR 50,55a(g) would result in hardship or unusual difficulty without a compensatory increase in the level of quality and safety. Therefore, pursuant to 10 CFR E0,55a(a)(3)(ii) we authorize you to use Code Case N-516-1, as you proposed in your July 18.-1997, letter.
