October 6,1997 CONNECTICUT YANKEE TESTING UPDATE l
The Connecticut Department of Enviromnental Protection (DEP) today confirmed the historic use of the offsite location identified with low-levels of radiation from the first round of testing. The site discussed on Friday, October 3,1997 as receiving excavation soil with low.
Icvels of radiation from the Connecticut Yankee (CY) Atomic Power Plant in Haddam is well below state and federal remediation levels.
The offsite location was a licensed day care facility from November 1984 to November 1990. The DEP also confitmed that the fill containing the radioactive material was deposited on the offsite location in 1989. DEP has consulted with state health officials and believe that no public health action is necessary with this new information.
"The exposure level for an individual at the site today and back when the fill was deposited still remains very, very, very low," said Arthur J. Rocque, Jr., DEP Commissioner.
"DEP, Depanment of Health Services and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission agree that the levels are insignificant and should not raise unnecessary concern with local residents. Using conservative calculations, in 1989 when the soil was placed on site, the levels of radiation would be a small fraction of a chest x ray."
Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Nuclear Regidatory Conunission and Northeast Utilities have been testing water, soil and sediment samples from the area around the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Station since mid-September. The state will continue soil sampling and will initiate a ground water testing program over the next several weeks.
Northeast Utilities, under supervision of the DEP, will be testing the ground water at the Connecticut Yankee plant and in the immediate vicinity. The ground water testing program will be operational by mid October and test results forthcoming.
The DEP has also begun a process to identify and sample additional properties which may have received fill from Connecticut Yankee. If a person believes they have received potentially contaminated fill from Connecticut Yankee they are advised to contact the DEP at (860) 424-3029.
The DEP has established a 24-hout " Connecticut Yankee Information Line" at (860) 424-4190 to provide the public with information on DEP's activities in and around Connecticut YanNCC.
