DEVICE TYPE: Fill Level Gauge Source Holder DESCRIPTION:
The outer physical characteristics of these devices are those of i a closed steel cylinder 5-1/2 inches (139.7 mm) in height and 3-1/2 inches (88.9 mm) in diameter, mounted with its longest axis vertical on a 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) thick steel bottom plate. The bottom plate is attached to the cylinder with eight screws. The 1/4 inch thick steel top plate is welded to the cylinder which has a wall thickness of 7/32 inch (5.6 mm) . A mounting bracket is welded to the cylinder wall. Each of the units is designed to be-watertight.
The only differences between the two units are in (1) the mounting brackets and electrical conduit entrances which are attached to the bottom and sides of the units, and (2) the beam collimators. The 35-0103 has a 27' collimator and the 35-0102 has a 30' collimator. The angles are measured downward from the horizontal at the top of the source. The ports are both fan shaped and are 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) wide.
The source of radiation is mounted at the approximate center of a cylindrical shield consisting of two Mallory-1000 cylindrical shields fitted together one on the top of the other. The lower shield section includes the beam port'and suitable machined openings for the mounting of the Mallory-1000 source rotor. The source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45*, in a horizontal plane, between the "on" and "off" positions by the application of power to the rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shield assembly and coupled to the rotor. The solenoid acts against a return spring which returns the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted.
Internally mounted micro switches indicate the position of the source rotor as "on" or "off" by parallel wired, dual, red and green lights at the control console.

A metal label 3-3/8 inches (85.7 mm) by 2-3/16 inches (55.6 mm) attached to the outside of the device 90' from the cable connector bears the following:
CAUTION: RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL Ceaium-137 mc Date of Measurement Model No. 35-0102 or 35-0103 BRUN SENSOR SYSTEMS, INC., COLUMBUS, OHIO The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol.
EXTERNAL P_ADIATION LEVELS:
In accessible areas at one foot (304.8 mm) from the surface of the device radiation levels are 3 mR/hr (30 pSv/hr) or less with a 61 millicurie, (2.26 GRg) cesiua-137 source in the "off" position. A radiation level of 7 mR/hr (70 pSv/hr) exists over a
< small area in the region of the beam port which is inaccessible with the unit installed. Radiation levels for higher activities may be derives by extrapolation.
LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
- Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined ny the licensing authority.
The device shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
- REVIEWER NOTE: The user was instructed by the Brun Corporation to avoid tampering with the device containing the cesium-137 source. The Brun Corporation stated that a service contract would normally be sold with each device to include visits at six month intervals by a Brun Corporation representative tor the purpose of inspecting . devices and performing source leak tests.

- REVIEWER NOTE: The-Brun Corporation had also stated that they would install and relorste the source-holders and perform radiation surveys at the time of installation.
- REVIEWER NOTE: The devices were evaluated on the basis that they will be mounted at the side of a steel mold thereby preventing access to the beam of radiation and reducint radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mR/hr (1.0 pSv/hr).- If other applications are proposed, an evaluation of radiation levels in the forward direction will be necessary.
- REVIEWER NOTE: Since an "on-off" indicator is not located (
at the source shield and since the control console may be remote from the shield, consideration must be given to exposure of persons not aware of the exposed position of the source.

The source housing, is designed so that when the solenoid is electrically energised, the source rotor assembly is rotnted counterclockwise through 45*, and the source cavity in thus brought directly in line with the benm port. In this position the source is unshielded and the unit is "0PEll" . When the current is removed from the solenoid, the source rotor assembly rotates 45* in a clockwise direction by spring action. The only differences between the two units are in (1) the mounting brackets and electrical conduit entrances which are attached to the bottom and sides of the units, and (2) the beam collimators. The 35 0103 has a 270 collimator and the 35-0102 has a 300 collinator. The angles are measured downward from the horisontal at the top of the source. The ports are both fan shaped and are 1/4 inch wide. The source of radiation is mounted at the approximate center of a cylindrical shield consisting of two Mallory-1000 cylindrical shields fitted together one on top of the other. The lower shield se,ction includes the beam port and suitable machined openings for the mounting of the Mallory-1000 source rotor. The source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45 degrees, in a horisontal plane, between the "On" and "Of f" positions by the application of power to the rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shield assembly and coupled to the rotor. The solenoid acts against a return spring which returnes the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted. Internally mounted microswitches indicate the position of the source rotor as "On" or _"Off" by parallel wired, dual, red and green lights at the control console. The devices were evaluated on the basis that they will be mounted flush to the side of a. steel mold thereby preventing access to the bean _ of radiation and reducing . radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mr/hr.
