SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NQ21 NR-8094-D-802-S DATEt September 29, 1997 PAGE 2 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Fill-Level Gauge Source Holder DESCRIPTION:  :

This device is identical to the Models 35-0102 and 35-0103 with the exception of the electrical conduit which had been relocated at the rear.

The source of the radiation-is mounted at the approximate center of a cylindrical _ shield consisting of two Mallory-1000 cylindrical shields fitted together one on the top of the other.

  • The lower shield section includes the beam port and suitable machined openings for the mounting of the Mallory source rotor.

The source at the edge of the rotor is moved 45 degrees, in a horizontal plano, between the "ON" and "OFF" positions by the application of power to the rotary solenoid rounted at the bottom of the shield assembly and coupled to the ro.or. The solenoid acts against a return spring which returns the source to the shielded position when power is interrupted.

Internally mounted micro switches indicate the position of the source rotor as "ON" or "OFF" by parallel wired, dual red and green-lights at the~ control console.

LABELING:

t The 35-0101 contains a 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) thick aluminum label, attached by drive pins to the side of the source device, with the following information: the manufacture's name and address,_model, isotope, activity, date of assay, and the words " CAUTION:

RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL". The label is yellow with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol.

, EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Radiation levels in accessible areas at one foot (304.8 mm) from the surface of the device are 3 mR/hr (30 uSv/hr) or less with a 61 millicurie (2.26 GBq) cesium-137 source in the "off" position.

A radiation level of 7 inR/hr (70 uSv/hr) exists over a small area in the_ region of the beam port which is inaccessible with the unit installed. Radiation levels for higher activities may be derived by extrapolation, i

A RE3ISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE HQti NR-8094-D-802-S DATE: September 29, 1997 FAGE 3 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Fill-Level Oauge Source Holder  ;

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

The monufacturer reported that the source holder had been tested  !

' for on-off. operation and structural integrity et temperatures ranging from O'F (-17.8'C) to 250'F (121.1*C) and from 10% to '

100% humidity.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be '

determined by the licensing authority.

  • The device shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed-61 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: The devices were_ evaluated on the basis that they will be mounted flush to the side of a steel mold

- thereby preventing access to the beam of radiation and reducing radiation levels in the forward direction to about 0.1 mR/hr .(1 uSv/hr) . If other applications-are proposed, an evaluation of radiation levels in the forward direction '

will be necessary.  ;

  • REVIEWER NOTE: The user was instructed by the Brun Corporation to avoid tampering with the device containing the cesium-137 source. The Brun Corporation had stated that a service contract will normally be sold with each device to include visits at six month intervals by'a Brun Corporation representative for the purpose of inspecting the devices and performing source leak tests.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: The Brun Corporation had also stated that

- they would install and relocate the source-holders and perform radiation surveys at the time of installation.

-* - REVIEWER NOTE: Since an "on-off" indicator is not located at the source shield and since the control console may be remote from_the shield, consideration must be given to exposure.-of persons not aware of the exposed position of the s o u r c e '.

REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.: NR-8094-D-802-S DATE: September 29, 199'l PAGE 4 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Fill Level Gauge Source Holder SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

.1.

This device was originally approved for licensing purposes on July 25, 1966, by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The Model 35-0101 Fill-Level Gauge Source Holder is no longer manufactured and distributed by Brun Sensor Systems. Brun sensor Systems' materials license terminated January 23, 1973 and the company was acquired by Industrial Nucleonics Corporation that same month.

There is insufficient information on file for this device to perform a safety evaluation. Therefore, this certificate is being taken to inactive status without further review based on the original review and approval issued by the AEC.
