CASE STUDY REPORT - A REVIEW 0F MOTOR-0PERATED VALVE PERFORMANCE (AE0D/C603)
Enclosed for your information is a copy of the final AE0D case study report on operational experience involving motor-operated valve assemblies. This study was initiated by AE0D in response to action item 6(i) of the staff actions resulting from the investigation of the June 9,1985 event at Davis-Besse.
This action item requested that AE0D conduct a review of failures of l safety-related motor-operated valves and provide an assessment of pertinent failure modes affecting valve assembly performance under design basis conditions.
The enclosed report documents AE0D's findings, conclusions, and recommendations resulting from the study and reflects the results of the peer review process. In view of the comon NRC and industry objective of resolving identified safety issues relating to the operation of nuclear power plants in the most effective manner, we have forwarded a request to NUMARC to undertake appropriate industry initiatives to address the motor-operated valve assembly performance related problems and recomendations identified in the AE00 report.
The AE0D report has been forwarded to NRR, IE, RES, and the Regions for information.
