l modification requirements (10 CFR 50.62) by the completion of the Cycle 8 refueling outage (8R). GPUN is a participant in the B&W Owners Group l
which has identified a preferred approach for compliance with NRC requirements. The B&W Owners Group submitted a description of this technical approach on October 8,1985. The Owners Group is waiting for approval (Safety Evaluation Report) of this approach. We understand that there have been delays in the issuance of the SER. GPUN does not intend to commence engineering and design work associated with ATWS until technical approval of the approach is received and reviewed by the B&W Owners Group. This has been previously communicated to your staff.
In order to complete this work by the end of the 8R Outage GPUN needs lead time for engineering, procurement and construction work.
GPUN will need issuance of the Safety Evaluation Report by June 1,1987 to ensure sufficient lead time exists.
If the SER is not issued by June 1,1987 then TMI will be unable to complete ATWS requirements by the end of the 8R outage in a manner consistent with GPUN typical standard project duration time frames. This letter can be considered a request for schedule change should the June 1987 SER issuance not occur. Therefore a response is not requested unless this SER is not issued by the date needed.
