Dear Mr. Berkow:

During its regular meetings of June 3 and June 10 the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors heard comments about the Draft Environmental Statement (DES) for the decommissioning of Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant, Unit No. 3. A great deal of concern was expressed about the adequacy of the DES and the DES review process under taken by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

The Board was relieved to hear that the comment period had been extend-ed from the original period ending June 16, 1986 to August 15, 1986.

The Board feels that earthquake risk, fuel leakage, and risks of long term storage are major community concerns demanding broad public input In this regard, the Board requests that a public hearing on the DES be held prior to the close of the comment period.

The Board views the project as having potential long term consequences for both the natural state of the bay and land area surrounding it.

Also, the long term economic viability of the area is in question as shoreline and near-by development may be affected into the distant future. .

With these concerns I hope the NRC will agree to allow in its processes for a maximum amount of public comment.

Thank you for your continued cooperation.
