SUBJECT:
LICENSEE NOTIFICATION OF SHIPMENT OF HIGH-ENRICHED URANIUM TO CANADA UNDER EXPORT LICENSE l
XSNM03012 (SECY-98-112 DATED MAY 21,1998)
Export license XSNM03012, issued on June 8,1998, to Transnuclear, Inc., authorized the export of 26.738 kilograms of HEU (93.3 percent) in the form of metal pieces to be used for fabrication of medical Mo-90 production targets for the NRU reactor operated by the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories (CRL). This material represents a contingency supply for medical isotope production at the NRU reactor until the MAPLE reactors come on line.
The licensee has notified us, in accordance with Condition 10 on the license, that two 5 kilogram shipments are being planned; one shipment is scheduled to be made in October 1999 and the other in late November or early December 1999. A copy of the letter of notification is attached.
The upcoming shipments will be the third and fourth under the license. Notification letters for the first two shipments were forwarded to the Commission on October 8,1998 and April 26, 1999.
