Washington, D.C.
20555 SERVED FEB 2-1987
Dear Mr. Zeck:
We, the undersigned, are members of the New Hampshire House of Representatives for the Thirteenth District of Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Our district includes the towns of Exeter and Newfields, both within the proposed ten-mile evacuation zone for the Seabrook nuclear plant. Recently, New Hampshire Yankee, the plant's owner, filed a request with your commission that this zone be reduced to one mile. We urge you to deny the New Hampshire Yankee request.
The safety of our constituents is our main concern. While New Hampshire Yankee believes that a one-mile zone is safe, virtually none of our constituents do.
An emergency at the plant, even if thoroughly contained, could cause panic in the Seacoast area.
If our constituents had a legally-approved evacuation procedure to rely on, such potential chaos could be avoided. The town of Exeter has, in good faith, partici-pated in the planning process. We are dismayed that New Hampshire Yankee has now chosen to abandon us.
We hope that, in considering the New Hampshire Yankee request, you will find the concerns of our communi-ties and others within the time-honored accepted ten-mile zone to be paramount to the claims of the utility.
Sincerely,
"),
