SUBJECT:

NRC INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-327/97-09 AND 50-328/97-09

Dear Mr. Kingsley:

- This refers to the regional team inspection conducted August 4-8,1997, at the Sequoyah

facility. The enclosed report presents the results of this inspection.

This team inspection was conducted to assess the effectiveness of your controls in

identifying, resolving, and preventing problems. The assessment was done by reviewing

approximately three years of historical data for three selected systems. The systems

selected were the emergency diesel generator, auxiliary fcedwater, and vital inverter

systems.

The results of this assessment indicate that there is a consistent improving trend in your

corrective action programs. While a significant number of problems continue to be identified

.

by your programs, the inspection showed that during 1997, corrective actions were generally

more thorough, and more timely than the actions taken during the previous two years. The

NRC considers that the involvement of top site management in daily Management Review

Committee activities, reviewing problem evaluation reports, is a positive influence in the

improving trend.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter, its

enclosures, and your response will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).

Sincerely,

ORIGINAL SIGED BY

PAU: FREDRICKSON
