September 12,1997 Docket No. 70 36 License No. SNhi 33 hir. hiichael Weber, Chief Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Cycle Safety and Safeguards, NhtSS U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20$$$-0001
Subject:
Proposed Actions for 10 CFR 20.304 Ilurials (TAC NO L30912)
Dear hir. Weber:
In accordance with Combustion Engineering's (CE) letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated January 24,1997, and our meeting on April 24,1997, CE has reviewed disposal records, monitoring data, and hydrogeological data associated with the burial area. After reviewing this information, CE believes that geological conditions are i
suitable to support leaving the burial area in place. As discussed during our April meeting, non radiological components are also present in the burial area. In concert with our discussions with the NRC, we have been working with the hiissouri Department of Natural Resources (hiDNR) toward an ultimate solution for this area. In addition to the actions taken to date and to support continued disposal in place, CE has developed a liydrogeologic Investigation and Groundwater hionitoring Work Plan that will be presented to the h1DNR on September 26 in Jefferson City, hiissouri.
We have invited the NRC to participate in this meeting at MDNR in JefTerson City, so that the principle regulatory stake holders are present. A meeting agenda is attached.
If there are questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact Dr. Earl Saito of my stalTat (314) 937 4691, Ext. 461, or myself at (314) 937-4691, Ext. 399.
