King of Prussia, PA 19406 Subjects Inspection Report No. 70-903/8,1 91 Terminated License No. SNM-871

Dear Mr. Martin:

I am writing in reference to the safety inspection con-ducted by Mr. J. Roth of your office on February 25-26, 1985, in the Waste Storare Building located on the former Gulf-l United Nuclear Corporation site in Fawlinr, New York, which l

is now owned by The National Park Service.

As a result of l

that survey, the premises were released for unrestricted use.

I am a mrmber of the Conservation Advisory Board, Town of Pawline, and a member of the Nuclear Lake Manarement Advisory i

Committee.

On Aucust 30, 1985, I made an unofficial visit to the Nuclear Lake Property referenced above.

>I was accompanied t

by Mr. and Mrs. James Baker of Carmel, NY. and Mr. William l

Alexander of Patterson, NY., all science teachers employed by

[

the Yorktown and Brewster School Districts, respectively.

Their interest was in the taking of photos and obtaining back-Fround natorial for use in their classroom curriculums.

They had brourht a reirer counter with them, property of Brewster Hirn Schocl.

This instrument was nanufactured by Dosimeter Corporation of America, Cinncinnati, Ohio Dosineter Model

, #3700.

It wac purchased new in 1978-1979 and had been cali-brated at that time.

It is considered to be an accurate in-ctrunent.

Radiation levels were checked at various locations in the i

closed facility area and all radiation roadines on the instru-ment were normal until the recent " clean-up" area in the Waste Storare Buildine was checked.

The indicator jumped to read i

5 mrem /hr.

This was in the hole of the concrete floor that l

had been chipped out for cleanup and removal.

I realize that this level of radiation is not a matter of i

serious concern.

However, permitted radiation levels for un-restricted access areas is 2 mrem /hr. and the recorded radia-tion level certainly exceeds that.

It is pos91ble that the j

instrument used is slightly inaccurate.

However, the batteries were new.

It is also possible that radiation has miFrated into the cleaned up area.

Whatever the cause of the exces-cively hiPh radiation reading, it should be investicated by your department to ascertain if additional clean up work is required in this area of the buildinr.

I chall be waitinF to hear from you in regards to this matter.

If you need any additional information you may write me directly ats RR1, Box 236, Pawline, NY 12564 or phone me at:

914-855-3266.

Thank you for your attention to our con-cerns.

Very truly you C
