SUMMARY

OF MEETING ON FEBRUARY 5, 1987 On February 5, 1987, members of the NRC staff met with representatives of Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) in Bethesda, Maryland. A list of attendees is provided in Enclosure 1. Presentation material used by YAEC at the meeting is included in Enclosure 2. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the RELAP5YA computer code and its use in small break loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) analysis in accordance with TMI Action Plan item II.K.3.30.

The meeting was requested by YAEC to discuss with the staff the efforts by YAEC to better model core liquid inventory behavior for small break LOCA applications.

As discussed in a letter dated December 5, 1986, YAEC was concerned that the computer representation of emergency core cooling bypass phenomena was overly conservative, based on comparisons to the semiscale S-LH-1 test. To investigate this problem, YAEC is performing additional assessments of RELAP5YA against the LOFT Test L5-1 and is looking at improvements to interphase drag models and downcomer region nodalization.

At the meeting, YAEC presented the results of their studies to date and discussed the additional analyses they plan to perform. By March 31, 1987, YAEC will submit their proposal for the final PWR Small Break LOCA analysis model. The results of the analyses using this model would then be submitted six months following staff approval of the model.

A few additional questions raised by the staff's review of the RELAP5YA code were also discussed. Those questions requiring a written response will be issued to YAEC in the near future and responses will also be provided by March 31, 1987.
