Vogtle Electric Generating Plant-Units 1 and 2; 50-424, 50-425; Derating Factors for Cable Ampacities in Closed Tray; Letter GN-897, dated May 6, 1986 Attention: Mr. J. Nelson Grace In our previous correspondence on this subject, Georgia Power Company described a potentially reportable condition whereby ampacity derating for power cables routed in solid bottom cable tray with unventilated cover was not specifically addressed in applicabla calculations and design criteria.

A field walkdown was conducted to determine if any unventilated tray covers had been installed either for debris protection or for Regulatory Guide 1.75 separation barriers on power cable tray.

The walkdown determined that no tray covers had been installed.

Since no defective condition was identified as a result of the field walkdown, l

Georgia Power Company has concluded that this concern is not reportable pursuant to the requirements of 10 CFR 50.55(e) or 10 CFR 21.

To prevent future concerns, design drawings are being modified to require engineering approval prior to the installation of unventilated tray cove *s on solid bottom cable tray susceptible to ampacity derating l

concerns.

In addition, the applicable calculation and design criteria will be revised to address ampacity derating for power cable in closed tray.

This response contains no proprietary information and may be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.

Yours,truly, f i
