REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RELATED TO GENERIC LETTER 96-06 FOR GRAND CULF NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 1 (TAC NO. M96815)

Dear Mr. Hagan:

The staff has been revi: wing your submittals dated October 29, 1996, and January 28, 1997, in response to Generic Letter (GL) 96-06, " Assurance of Equipment Operability and Containment Integrity During Design-Basis Accident Conditions," that was issued on September 30, 1996.

In the response of January 28, 1997, you identified that 12 pipe lines penetrating containment and 6 pipe lines penetrating the drywell (within the containment) are susceptible to thermally-induced pressurization during accidents and were evaluated for operability. In that letter, you committed to complete the appropriate corrective actions for these pipes prior to the restart from refueling outage nine, that is scheduled for the Spring of 1998.

To permit the staff to continue its review of your submittals, we request that you provide the following information: (1) summaries of the evaluations of the 18 piping lives penetrating the containment and the drywell, (2) the summaries should describe the method of analysis, including the assumptions used, and the results, (3) fabrication drawings of the piping sections evaluated, (4) a discussion on how the criteria used for the evaluations meet the licensing basis criteria for Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit 1, and (5) the schedule for completion of any modifications that are required.

To keep on the current schedule, we request that the above information be provided within 60 days of your receipt of this letter. A telecopy of the request was forwarded to you staff to expedite your response, i :erel , 3 R w Senior Project Manager Project Dire orate IV-1 Division of Reactor Projects Ill/IV Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket No. 50-416 cc: See next page b[Cl neo $
