SUBJECT:

TRIP REPORT: COURSE ON "uECTR0 CHEMICAL TECHNIQUES IN CORROSION ENGINEERING.' THE CENTER FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, CHARLOTTESVILLE.

VIRGINIA. JUNE 2-6, 1997 The purpose of this course was to provide hands-on experience and understanding of electrochemical techniques and to familiarize attendees with the basic principles of corrosion science. This training is directly applicable to the work we are doing in both the Container Life and Source Term (CLST) and Evolution of Near-Field Environment (ENFE) Key Technical Issue (KTI) teams. The knowledge gained from this course will allow us to better evaluate the galvanic protection issues. pitting and crevice corrosion stress corrosion cracking and other corrosion mechanisms associated with waste package degradation in the proposed Yucca Mountain repository.

Attached is the Agenda for the course. The lecture sessions each morning were followed by afternoon laboratory experiments that underscored the i principles discussed that day. In the evening, post-lab discussions further l\)$

which included discussions of electrochemical reactions electrochemical l- potentials, concentration effects, the Nernst equation, Pourbaix diagrams,-

j- kinetics of _ electrochemical reactions, and galvanic corrosion were covered.

The focus of-the.second day was passivity and localized corrosion, including-

pitting and crevice corrosion. Lecture-topics and lab activities of the third j day emphasized the use of nnn-destructive testing techniques and concepts,
such-as polarization resistance measurements. equivalent circuits, and p electrochemical impedanceispectroscopy, The influences of mass transport and current distribution in electrochemical systems, the effects of_ fluid

-velocity, and_ cathodic protection were addressed on the-fourth day. The L

_ course concluded with lectures _ on practicall examples of corrosion and

-corrosion engineering, rincluding a discussion of the Statue.of Liberty

refurbishment.

This class was very wel_l-organized'and extremely informative.

The knowledge gained-from this clas's will provide a. solid' basis for corrosion-related issues in our CLST and ENFE KTI work; TWe highly recommend it for technical people.

i seeking a basic understanding of corrosion principles.
