August 8, 1999 CHAIRMAN Mr. Ralph H. Stoll Director, U.S. Affairs Pangea Resources City Center Bellevue, Suite 1840 500108" Avenue, N.E.

Bellevue, Washington 98004-5538

Dear Mr. Stoll:

Thank you for your letter dated July 8,1999, offering to formally brief me regarding the Pangea concept. The Government of Australia has advised the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff l

that the search for a suitable site in South Australia for a national radioactive waste repository is currently in the investigative stage. Moreover, we understand that the planned repository would be used only for wastes arising from the medical, research and industrial use of radioactive materials in Australia and would not be used for nuclear waste from other countries.

Given the status of Australia's waste program, I believe it would be premature to schedule a

. briefing at this time. If the Government of Australia should change their official policy to indicate some interest in pursuing the Pangea concept, I would like the opportunity to reconsider your l

offer for a briefing.

i Sincerely, ou V&
