DOCKET NOS. 50-508, 509 4

323.14 The description of the completely revised ground water drainage system in section 3.4.5 (Amendment #4) is inadequate. Provide references that document the successful use of this type of drainage system. The PSAR discussion does not demonstrate that the proposed system will meet your revised ground water level design criteria which limits the ground water level to 20' above the foundation elevation. This depressed ground water level is some 50 f t below normal levels at the plant. Either demon-strate that a drainage system will meet the design ground water level or consider the ground water at or near plant grade after construction. The answers to the above may be considered

with responses to question 321.24.

323.15 Due to the complexities of lithology and structure in the area (RSP) of the proposed WPPSS 3/5 site it will be necessary for Washing-ton Public Power Supply System during and af ter the excavation process to carry out detailed large scale (1 in. = 15 f t.)

geologic mapping of the power block. This coverage should include extensive photographic and laboratory documentation of the significance of all the exposed geologic features (weathering front, 11thologies, significant stratigraphic units, joints, faulta, etc.) within the excavation. In the case of some of these features it may be necessary for the applicant -

to provide detailed interpretations of their origin in the PSAR.

Also, it is recomended that WPPSS develop and consistently use a sedimentary terminology for mapping and petrographic descriptions at the site. State your intent to conform to our position and provide an appropriate commitment in the PSAR.
