U.S. Department of inergy'y Commission staff has com>1eted its review of th The U.S. Nuclear Regulator s (DOE) " Rifle, Colorado,

) raft Completion Report" dated A)ril 1997.

Our review is documented in the enclosed draft Completion Review Report (CRR),

lhe CRR discusses the NRC staff's evaluation of the DOE's completion of the remedial action at the Rifle site in accordance with the requirements of the Remedial Action Plan and the Remedial Action Inspection Plan.

Based on its review. the NRC staff has identifled several open issues in radiation cleanup and control, and in groundwater protection.

These open issues are summarized in Appendix C of the CRR and discussed in more detail in the referenced portions of the main report.

These issues will need to be resolved in, or by, the final Completion Report in order for the NRC to concur in the completion of the remedial action at the Rifle site.
