! On September 3-5,'1974, D. Budge, Regulatory staff geologist, .O' l < accompanied by a geologist from the Washington State Department i j of Natural. Resources, Earth Sciences Division (WSDNR), visited  !-

i C the WPPSS Nuclear Projects No. 3.:and No._5 site near Satsop, - -

,; Washington in. order.to.oramine the site and to discuss questions',.m i . ,

j regarding geology. -On September- 3,51974, at the WPPSS office .:

-in Montesano, Washington',. the applicant conducted an orientation T

! .. . session utilizing models of the proposed site and facilities.- .

Following the orisntation session, the applicant conducted a ,

l general tour of the site area. During this tour, the trenches .

l along the Workman Creek, the Delezone, and the Weikswood Faults ~

by automobile to'the Crescent basalt quarry near the' site.

Possils were observed and collected from the Astoria formation MG while enroute to the quarry. After lunch, the participants met at the Woodward-Lundgren office at Satsop to examine photographs of the trenches located along the Scammon Creek fault and along  ?

.the tuff bed. A model of 'the tuff bed constructed with pegs -'

was also examined. The site visit. concluded with examination $.

of the trenches along the Gibson Creek fault and the continuous

' trenches along the tuff bed.. jg.gr 7,y , J ' . >

~g Significance of Terraces Located North of Site .'

The importance of the terraces located $torth of the site in establishing the~ age of the faulting observed in the region was discussed. The staff stated that additional work on ,

dating these terraces was necessary. Several methods of dating such as more detailed mapping and the use of amino acid and pollen techniques wer:e discussed. ~.= . . . . -
