SUMMARY

OF NOVEMBER 19th & 20th MEETINGS BETWEEN WASHINGTON STATE

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, WASHINGTON STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT, AND U.S.A.E.C. i

. i CONCERNING WPPSS NUCLEAR PROJECIS NOS. 3 AND 5 SITE VISIT

1.
j. On Tuesday, November 19, 1974, Regulatory staff members met with re-i presentatives of the Washington Geological Survey and State Highway

_l Department (see attendees list, enclosure "A"). .;

) The major item discussed was the landslide potential of the area near the WPPSS Nuclear Projects Nos. 3 and 5 site. The state's geologists questioned whether or not power block foundations really bear on the Astoria Formation. They expressed the opinion that rocks at the bearing formation might belong to the Montesano Formation. Based on their past experiences, the Montesano is much more resistant to landslides than the Astoria Formation. The state geologists also indi-cated that almost all the slides in the region occur along some type of geologic discontinuity (e.g. soft clay, silt seam, or fracture);

hence, their occurrence and lo' cation might be predicted.

Additional items of discussion with the State representatives included:

1. Oil and gas potential. Oil and gas potential in the site I area was discussed. This topic is presently being considered ,

in our evaluations of the WPPSS 3 and 5 site.

2. Anticulty of faults _. Several dating methods were discussed which could possibly establish.the time of last movement on T

the faults near the site with more precision.

3. Regional Geology. The State's geologists were generally satisfied with the quantity and quality of the data used in i developing the regional geologic picture presented in the l

applicants PSAR. ~

4 The following day, November 20, the above mentioned participants visited t

the site and environs of the proposed facility near Satsop, Washington.

In addition to the Regulatory staff and Washington State Geologists, j the applicant and his architect-engineer (Ebasco) and geotechnical l . consultant (Woodward-Lundgren) were also present. The purpose of. the l visit was to examine the site, and near site geologic and surficial conditions.

i The visit included inspection of rock core and soil samples stored at Satsop, Washington. In addltion, the applicant's peg model showing

-expected foundation conditions was viewed at his office in Satsop.

1.

i Several exposures of the terrace deposits north of the site; j 2.

Inspection of a tuff bed trench in the site area; i

3.

Inspection of slide areas Nos. 1, 2 and 6.

4.

Several formational contacts, Astoria, Lincoln creek and one fault contact between these formations.

5.

Several old (70 years) 30 to 40 feet deep railroad cuts thru the Astoria Formation.

The site visit geologic was concluded with a general discussion of site conditions.

The applicant indicated he will continue the current the scaff. landslide investigation and forward the results to terraces onAlso, the site. work will continue on dating of the faults and f
