.On November 4,1974, representatives of NPPSS, ma= o, and Cembustion i~
Engineering met with the Regulatory staff in Bethesda. 'this meeting was
- held to discuss the staff's position on antiliary feedwater syste design.

r' We stated ear psition on the design af =~i14=ey feedwater systas. We
/
believe that tNo smiliary feedwater system dwn1d be designed to prwide
'a minimum of two independent and diverse trains of feedwater supply. Each j
train naast be designed to perform the coglete system function. The system 4
i should be designed to prwide different pump drive mechanisms with diverse i
power supply sources for the pump drives, the valve operators, and control j
systems for each i=Hvidual subsystem. The piping arrangment should provide l
- physical and functional independence between the subsystems. Such a design assures that the system will withstand a failure of piping, component, power A
supply or control function in the r=Anwtant. systems. Interconnecting piping 1
may be prUVided betWeen subsystems with normally Closed valves in the line.
O,These valves may be manually operated from the control room, using the power diversity principle for the valve operators and actuation systems.,

.MThe rattamala for se peeltim uns diertsmendi We esplained that we are
../.;[
r ; requiring diversity in the paup drives and power sources to assure a high T,rdegree of reliability.ta-they=i14=ey feeduster system. Since the==414=ry

~
feeduster system usy be used for normal reactor startup and sinatdown as well.
b as for certain accident conditions, it is subject to more f+6 challenge during the life of the plant. Therefore, it must be a reliable systen. Also, studies have indicated that the possibility of the loss of onsite power should
{
not be considered unlikely. The possible loss of both offsite and onsite sources of AC power was discussed..

'Ihe auxiliary feedwater system currently proposed for WPPSS Nuclear Projects No. 3 and No. 5 consists of two full-capacity,' motor-driven pumps and AC controls.. Ebasco described a system modification being considered in order f'
to meet our position. 1his modification would indd a third full-capacity Z M'
./ rsystem which has a tinf>ine-driven pump and DC cuatrolsWThis system would '

- 4 that the systen described in the PSAR was designed to minimize the location of

l high energy fluid piping in areas of the plant containing safety-related i
equipment. We stated that a system using a turbine-driven pump is not the i
only acceptable way to meet car pos, itioru.
