MEMORANDUM F03: William P. Gammill, Assistant Director for Site Technology, DSE FROM:
J. Carl Stepp, Chief, Geosciences Branch, DSE r
SUBJECT:
REPORT OF FAULTING IN THE EXCAVATION FOR WNP UNIT 3 On Friday, October 14, A. Bournia received a telephone call from the WPPSS project manager for WNP Units 3 and 5, reporting the discovery of faulting in the excavation for WNP Unit 3 Later in the af ternoon Dr. Bournia, Dr. Budge and I obtained more details during a conference call with WPPSS, Lhasco and Woodward Clyde personnel, anong them Bob Douglas and Dennis McClung (Woodward Clyde geologist).
Three faults have been uncovered in the excavation for Unit 3.
Two are in the east side of the excavation about 40 f t. and 60.f t north of the southeast corner. The third is in the west bank of the excavation i
about 40 to 50 ft, south of the NW corner (see Fig. 2.5.39 of the P5AR). Offs, ets on the faults exposed in the east bank are 0.3 and 3 ft, respectively and offset on the fault exposed in the west. bank is 4 ft. (at a tuff bed in the Astoria fm).
The offsets are all in the Astoria fm of liiocene age. No absolutely definitive ag'e of nost r* cent movement has been established.
Based on the information given us, it appears that these small faults are a part of the fault set that we saw exposed in a trench south of the plant site iluring our CP review. These are discussed on page 2.5-55a of the PSAR. We concluded during our review that these faults were related to the development of the Minot Peak anticline and Weiksuaod fault and that movement on them was pre-Pleistocene based on regional relationships.
See also our evaluation on pages 2-15 through 2-19 of the SER.

William P.~Gammill CCT 17 1977 I recommend that Dave Budge review this situation with Bob Jackson on Monday and develop any additional requirements for mapping and dating these faults that may be needed. Based on the outcome of their reconnended additional work, we should determine whether a visit to the site is needed and, so, when.
