Dear-Mr. Carr:

Your Quality Assurance Program A) proval No. 0848 is-hereby terminated as discussed by telephone with Stepien-0'Connor of my staff. -The Nuclear Regulatory Commission published a final rule, effective June 27, 1997 revising the requirements of-10 CFR Part 34. " Licenses for Industrial Radiography and Radiation Safety Requirements for Industrial Radiographic Operations." The revision, which contained numerous changes in the '

requirements. also modifled the quality assurance (0A) requirements for transportation. As a result of these changes, a separate NRC OA program approval is no longer needed.

Specifically, transportation activities are now contained.in a new paragraph.

10 CFR 71.101(g).

This provision was added to the regulations and requires that inspection and maintenance arograms limited to radiographic exposure devices, source changers, or paccages transporting these devices and meeting the provisions of 10 CFR Part 34.31(b). or equivalent Agreement State regulations, satisfy the: general license requirements specified in 10 CFR Part i

71.12(b) for Type B transport packages.
